Local Issues

Understanding local government decisions is crucial for business planning, as council policies directly impact operational costs and the broader economic environment in which our members operate.

Gold Coast City Council has navigated significant budget pressures, with major implications for local ratepayers and businesses. Councillors ultimately settled on a 4.7 per cent general rate increase after initially considering a record rate hike that would have impacted businesses more severely.

Budget deliberations featured heated discussions about major infrastructure projects, with some councillors pushing to scrap initiatives like the Springbrook cableway to keep rates manageable. Mayor Tom Tate called for wealthier ratepayers to shoulder more of the burden.

These council decisions will affect business operating costs across the Gold Coast region. We encourage all MCC members to stay informed about local government policies and consider how these changes may impact your business planning for the coming year.
