Fire Ant Biosecurity Warning: Know Your Business Obligations

Newsletter section image

Fire ant biosecurity is a serious and growing concern for businesses across South East Queensland, and a recent enforcement case has brought the stakes into sharp focus for local operators.

A recent case serves as a stark warning for businesses handling soil, plant material, or second-hand goods. The significant gap between the fine issued and the cost of the resulting outbreak has prompted calls for significantly tougher penalties as authorities continue working to bring the spread under control.

For Mudgeeraba businesses involved in landscaping, construction, agriculture, or the movement of any earth materials, the message is clear: inspect before you transport. The reputational and financial consequences of non-compliance far outweigh the cost of due diligence.

We encourage all MCC members to review their obligations under Queensland's fire ant biosecurity regulations. Visit the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for up-to-date information on what your business needs to do to stay compliant — and to help protect our local community and environment from further spread.
